Comics meet the classics in the launch of The Graphic Canon (Seven Stories Press), a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind trilogy that brings classic literatures of the world together with legendary graphic artists and illustrators.

Artists Molly Crabapple, Sanya Glisic and Gareth Hinds join Editor Russ Kick for the launch of The Graphic Canon, a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind trilogy that brings classic literatures of the world together with legendary graphic artists and illustrators. Called the “graphic publishing literary event of the year” (Publishers Weekly) Volume 1: From The Epic of Gilgamesh to Shakespeare to Dangerous Liaisons takes us on a visual tour from the earliest literature through the end of the 1700s. It features, The Tibetan Book of the Dead reimagined by Sanya Glisic, Molly Crabapple’s version of Dangerous Liaisons, Gareth Hinds’ watercolor telling of The Odyssey, as well as Hamlet, The Divine Comedy, The Arabian Nights, Tale of Genji, The Canterbury Tales, The Tao te Ching, Gulliver’s Travels, Don Quixote, Candide, an Incan play, a Native American folktale, works by renowned artists Will Eisner and Robert Crumb and much, much more.

Edited by Russ Kick, The Graphic Canon is an extraordinary collection that will continue with Volume 2: Kubla Khan to the Bronte Sisters to The Picture of Dorian Gray (August 2012), and Volume 3: From Heart of Darkness to Hemingway to Infinite Jest (October 2012). The entire trilogy features over 189 works of literature visualized by more than 130 illustrators and artists. Most of the works are specially commissioned for this book; some rarely seen before.

Fine artist, illustrator, and comics creator Molly Crabapple captures the absurdity of modern life in intricate, theatrical detail in her fine art work, drawing inspiration from politics, polite (and not-so-polite) society, and hundreds of years of literature. Her work is burlesque-inspired in the broadest definition of the word – deftly satirizing the powerful with adorably sinister animals, steampunk-tinged machinery, and of course, beautiful girls. But it’s not all fantastical – when Occupy Wall Street broke out, Molly was there, capturing the immediacy of the revolutionary feeling in pen and ink. In a new 48-page book from IDW, you can get Molly’s art in gorgeous full-color, work that’s decorated glamorous nightclubs, museums and galleries, and protest signs and occupied spaces around the country. Comedian Margaret Cho contributes the Foreward.

To enter the Devil in the Details Contest, either

OR

2. Preorder your copy of The Art of Molly Crabapple Volume 2: Devil in the Details at your local comics store. It’s in Diamond Previews starting May. It’s Diamond code is may120457 and its ISBN is 978-1613772737 . Email proof of this (like an email to your local comics store) to WeekInHell@Gmail.com. Preordering from local stores is VERY important, both because we want stores to carry our weird little art book, and because supporting stores, rather than Amazon, is what keeps the world from turning into parking lots and Walmart

We will be choosing one winner who preordered on Amazon, and one winner who pre-ordered from their local store. Judging by the last contest, preordering at a local store is the best way to win. Contest closes on May 30, and winners will be chosen and notified by June 4th.

Thank you so much for your support!
