You and Gala are so cute together – I’ve been keeping up on your Austin happenings via her Flickr. I am so happy with the way Star coded things up….love how all the custom typefaces are showing up perfectly!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR WORK its all over my tumblr(: I’m also a big Typhoid Mary fan, when will we be getting some preview art and maybe some insight?

    sincerely, Anxious Foryoureply

    1. Melissa

I don’t know if Marvel will let me show off the preview art : ( However, I will say… it’s an Annie Nocenti story with Mary showing every side of her personality : )

interesting πŸ˜€ im pretty sure you can, i mean not completely sure but carey and choi do it all the time! i also read you sold some of the original art to help raise funds for nocenti’s art school, thats pretty awesome and i wish i wouldve known so i couldve had a chance to buy some-_-

last we saw typhoid, she had run off from the initiative and was loose in madripoor losing control. do u know if this story updates her current whereabouts?

june cannot get here fast enough :/

    1. Melissa

Let me ask my overlord : ) If she says yes, maybe I’ll post a panel or an ink.

I think the Typhoid story I’m doing is more of a timeless tale that could fit in at any point of her narrative.

I did indeed twitter-auction a drawing to help the Cine Institute. Here’s me speed drawing some sort of obscure beastie for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-I-Hu6CLy_w&feature=related

  17. Justice foxx.

πŸ˜€ that would be awesome !! but dam that sucks i was so hoping nocenti would be the one to update us on her current whereabouts, i think she could make such a good story on her current situation (losing her mind in a place like madripoor)

and yup, i saw that video a while ago its pretty amazing

It’s blocked at my place of employment, which uses a Barracuda Web Filter. I’m not in IT, but I’m pretty sure the filtering is driven by a subscription service, so most likely any employer using the same censor box will also block mollycrabapple.com.

  27. david

You’re in good company, my music & literature blog is also blocked in many places, and was on Google’s restricted list for a couple of years until I convinced them I wasn’t pornographic (at least online).

  28. Web artist

How or why do websites know to block you?
Have you thought of adding some meta tags (keywords, description and others) to your web pages to help counter this blockage?

Or are people putting your links on, for example, StumbleUpon and marking the NSFW work type category…which is then picked up by other sites?

  29. Mark

First of all…..LOVE YOUR WORK!!! I think it is so cool. Secondly, I just wanted to post a little good news. I was riding Acela this morning and tried to access your site and was able to. Looks like it’s not being blocked anymore.

HA HA! Great pictures, Molly. I wondered how many hours it took Katelin to wash of that blue body paint!

I wanted to thank you (and your staff/friends) once again for attending Intervention (I was the guy in the audience raving about how superb your presentation was on Saturday). I learned A LOT of practical information from your slideshow/talk (particularly in your suggestions of how to deal with the press).

As an artist who works in a variety of mediums (including conceptual performance, IMHO), you are definitely a positive force to be reckoned with. Your presentation was very inspiring and empowering (and like I said, PRACTICAL). Now that you’ve conquered the world, I look forward to following your next work!!

    And Happy Birthday!

    Happy Birthday, Molly!!

I wish us many many more.

I look forward to all your updates, thanks.

I <3 your stuff. I think I'd said that once or twice before, but it needed to be said. Day 4's painting was my favorite.

If I was an artist, I'd want to be like you, but I'm a writer, so I'm hoping to tell whimsical stories, with an emphasis on the "freakish" definition of whimsical, in the YA genre.

    Best of luck with everything.

Great vid, and some cool exposure. Its awesome to see you did so well with that project. I was thinking of doing a kickstarter project myself, but not sure how to approach it yet. Care to share your thoughts on the whole process (if you haven’t already and I just missed it)?

Molly, your portraits have such a unique quality to them that makes them shine. I love the UN-finished look to them, especially how they seem to just dissolve into watery drizzle that you did on several of the portraits, Cesare Borgia being one of my favorite examples of this! Unfortunately, I’m a 24 year old, just out of school artist, so I can’t afford any of these beautiful drawings, but I hope that knowing that you give aspiring artists like me infinite amounts of inspiration is enough for now!

Holy Unsinkable Molly! I just found you through Lisa Stock of In By the Eye . . . I knew if Lisa was recommending you, you were not-to-be-missed. I think I’ve been rendered speechless, and Lisa will tell you that rarely happens. I love your work so much that I’m going to have to absorb, come back, absorb some more . . . and then I may be ready to comment. For now let’s leave it at WOW.

Alas no. I could have easily done 666 portraits of people in history who were worthy, but I had to cut it off at some point. Thanks for the kind words!!

    Ms. Crabapple,

Your offer of free squid sketches (wish I had been there I would have come by for one) made USA Today but the reporter didn’t know what to make of it.

The story described various signs on display…

“Drone Attacks Foment Terrorism” (an apparent reference to the death of al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki), “Obama: Stop Funding Israeli Occupation” (supporting a Palestinian state) and “Free Squid Sketches” (unclear).

Love the design of your website. Great stuff.

The raid you’re referring to happened on Tuesday, not Thursday. As of Thursday (today), Scott Olson is still unconscious and in critical condition.

I’m sure I speak for every one when I say that our hearts go out to him and his family.

But from all your commercial activities, it sure seems like you are trying very, very hard to be in the 1%…or at least the top 10%.
(And a tip of the hat to your capitalistic, entrepreneurial and PR spirit!)

    1. Molly

I certainly am! I am a capitalist thing, but that doesn’t mean I’m down with lobbyists or banks giving bonuses out of their bailout money, or the outright fraud that caused the financial crisis. I don’t think the point of OWS is to demonize rich people, but rather to point out things that are fundementally unjust and unsustainable

If you notice, I got a mouse-lady in a sharp business suit.

Exactly. Entrepreneurial spirit and initiative cannot be equated with anti-capitalistic fraud and theft at the highest levels of our banking aka lobbying aka governmental system.

To assume so otherwise is oversimplification and a false equivalency.

  197. Ben Thompson

But a big part of OWS is that the 1% have too much money and that it should be taken from them via taxation (and other means) and the wealth of the rich 1% (anyone making over $350,000) should be redistributed to others….correct?
If one becomes part of the 1% through their smarts, hard work , entrepreneurial spirit and initiative they are lumped in as the “enemy” and are a target.
And most union guys make more than lots of us hard-working, up and coming entrepreneurs struggling to work around/with many of the rules the the union lobbyists set up through the government.

This is fantastic stuff. How much do you charge for something like these, and rather than on ring-binded paper, on pretty standard poster sized paper, good enough to frame and hang on the wall.

I assume you can see my email address so please send me a quote.

    Thank you in advance!

Every year I get a stipend (which is not nearly big enough) for being assistant principal. I always spend it on something nice for myself.

Gorgeous! THANK YOU for the gift of this year in review. My husband and I dwell in a cave north of the metropolis with our gifted n’ talented offspring, nurturing her artistic side. When MC has a new project to share, we drink it in and it emboldens us to go mad steeping soulfully in our own projects. You’re remarkable and it’s been amazeballz watching you flourish and spill your imagination across all different terrains. All the best in 2012, Molly!

I just watch this documentary I recorded few weeks ago. It was nice, it showed all the possibilites that can offer a comix, and its exciting power much better than all other kind of pornographies. But I think the better is to draw it, I can’t explain why but it’s very “fantasmatic”.

You were a great guide to this kind of documentary and that permits me to discover you work that I’m currently watching it. Your victorian work make me think about victorian work made by Odd Serriere (a french comics author). I like this universe. πŸ™‚

OMG. You are just incredible! Having been friends with Ron English for a zillion years ( I bought his first painting too in 1985!) I seem to frequently stumble upon politically and socially conscious brilliant artists. Plus, you enjoy absinthe! It doesn’t
get better than that! oddly enough Ron did the artwork for the container of the first American version of Absinthe (which was a cheap knockoff of the real stuff) called Absente. Now you can get a few versions legally as you know in the US but the better stuff is of course from Europe (I have a nice collection of it). I love you work and look forward to supporting you on Kickstarter. Hope to meet you some day and possibly buy one of your works since they resonate deeply with me.

    Hi Molly,
I hope the talk at the Groucho in London goes very well. Unfortunately, I cannot get there, but have just received your Scarlett Takes Manhattan from the US, and loved Puppet Makers. I really enoy your work and ‘quirkiness’ :o)

I am Russian. Do you know what Pussy Riot are most infamous for in Russia? Not for their show in the cathedral, as one would think. They are known for one of their previous “riots” – an act of group sex conducted in a small museum in Moscow, that was videotaped and leaked online. People were scared to go to the museum after that. If you get to know more about their organization, you would probably pause and take a second look at the current events. Between two points of view, whether these are three troubled ladies seeking attention or three glorified protestants against the totalitarian regime of Putin, there are so many shades of grey that I would not hurry to draw any conclusions.

Hi Celesta, I’ve seen the Russian LJ entry about this. However, that’s not what they’re being prosecuted for, and even if it were, it’s not something that anyone should spend seven years in jail for. I don’t see the shades of grey, irregardless of how offensive people see Pussy Riot’s work as.

Pussi – simply three silly and stupid hooligans who didn’t make anything, except provocations. They have no education, they are aggressive. But the whole world knows about them (knows their name, instead of that that they – a blank space). …Because there are the big rich persons interested in it. And in using these silly women in the purposes. Anybody from them doesn’t think of Pussi. I saw this situation in the case of Khodorkovsky. I am take of interview at Lyudmila Alekseeva. For she a main thing was to give political coloring. Khodorkovsky was simply a reason for demonstration of political views of opposition. Also now they use Pussy. It is limiting cynicism. And you help this cynism, when support them.

Stop trying so hard to get attention from the media. Before doing any crapy artwork search about the issue first. If you really care about social problems, do something about Wall Street Occupy in your country. These bitches deserve to be jailed for years for what they have done in Russia.

Pussy Riot isn’t even a band. They have no albums, they play at no ticketed venues, they only play songs for their very disturbing performance art. Plus they get funding from the NED, which to most every other country in the world, they are an intelligence operation:

The US is the country these days that practices torture, assassination, rendition, and indefinite detention without trials. We need to get our own house in order before we criticize others. At least Pussy Riot got a trial.

And I’m glad to hear that people themselves start to handle with this desaster to make things better. But the problem is, they don’t have to be repaid to

The company should also have a Steven Spielberg Funded budget that allows them to edit
that and make it fit for a daycare center and not the final decree.

I understand your mental make-up, as I too have seen the hypocracy of mankind in so many various ways, for countless years. Brazil, Germany, as well as the European Union and many latin american countries, are working on an UN -resolution to defend peoples private life and privates dates, so that the collected dates cannot be sell or used for any purpose.
The same kind of law prevents the european citizens from spying. Except when the NSA spies us, of course…
I hope the EFF will support us in this fight. Our rights and our intimity are in danger.

    Hey Molly
Nice interview for CNET… but I kinda didn’t get the reference on ‘old people’ At 52 i guess I am classed as ‘old’. I also incepted just about all of the technology you think of as ‘young’ I suppose. Including occupy (working title – active rebellion, a play on microsoft technology)… I guess art is judgement as well as porn. Sadly just another manifestation of the Godel proof.

Have you played TLOU? do you like the Goya? No accident.

    Cheers

you represent the part of America that earned the very special words “Land of the Free…Home of the Brave. You are very Brave! I resent that “Land of the Free…Home of the Brave” has been methodically replaced with “Land of the Safe…Home of the Scared”!!!

Our country stands divided (divided and conquered) — Now we are being ruled by fear and have been hypnotized by the corporate owned media who have convinced us Americans to vote against our own good, have taught us that we’re happy for losing and then…sadly, we actually think that we’ve won?

We the people living now owe so much more to our predecessors who sacrificed so much; up to and including their lives — we shouldn’t let their purpose die by allowing the media to scare us into agreeing that “SAFE” is the most important allegiance supported by the citizens of America.

Thank you for proving that Free & Brave is still at work — there is a price to pay for taking on the bastards that have hijacked our country and they have an endless supply of money and power to squash any voice that challenges the bastards!

    I applaud you. Thank you!

    Bret

Took a copy for my classroom door. Was wondering if it is just scribble or does it make a statement in Arabic?

Wow — you have been so creatively productive. Fantastic. I’ve worked on so many of the things you have done art for, Chelsea Manning, Guantanamo prisoners, Occupy.

I’ve seen your materials on the web, seeing you in the room surrounded by your work makes me realize that as impressed as I was, seeing it in the real, not virtual, world would even be more amazing.

I can’t wait to see what you accomplish in 2014.

    Keep up the amazing work!

    Happy 2014!

Thanks for including me on some of your awesome adventures – you and Fred inspire me to be a better artist and a better person. At times, I ask, “what would Molly do in this situation?” The answer usually involves drinking whiskey and creating something beautiful.

    works for me.

    see y’all soon.

Has anyone heard/read a description of what each aspect of this illustration by Ms. Crabapple for Matt Taibbi’s new book cover symbolizes? I would love to know.

Just happened to stumble across your art online and (as well as blowing my mind how amazing it is) it reminded me of Amanda Palmer.. so I googled and here this is! I ordered the randomly selected 3 cards package from the tarot set.. it would be incredible if I got this card though as this is seriously beautiful.

Like. But take it from one who knows — you don’t have to worry about becoming invisible until you turn 50. Then it happens IMMEDIATELY.

I sat and stared at this piece for such a long time. For me it captures beautifully the feeling of lamenting our younger years that women over 30 are supposed to feel. Can’t say I lament for my twenties or pine to be younger, but I definitely agree with the invisibility phenomenon – it can be quite suffocating. Beautiful portrait, thank you for sharing.

I think he sees himself as Churchillian. Churchill was a better painter, and better at everything else, including drinking. The question in my mind is, is Bush a better painter than Hitler?

    Dear Molly Crabapple! ~
Once more You are THERE: Thank You so much!
    What “the Public” ~ those people who don’t often risk arrest for their principles ~ realize is that IT IS UNIVERSALLY ROUTINE for cops to accuse their VICTIMS of assault! {I’ve got a few of these on my rap sheet for showing up “armed” with a camera!}
So while I have ‘dropped back’ behind the front lines to OCCUPY my ‘umble Mendocino hideout {a fulltime yob, it turns out!}, I enthusiastically APPLAUD Your perseverence and Presence~with~Pen in the sharkpit that is the Activist courtroom du jour!
Your Work is Immensely & Uniquely Valuable to both the Historic Outcome and Immediate Morale Support of these Critical Struggles!
    Let’s talktalk sometime!
    Peace, Love, Revolution/Revelation!
    Your Sister-in-Ink,

It is incredibly sad to see a great nation in such a mess because of religion, politics and historical wrongs. Again the children are the innocents. I do hope America goes home and sorts out its own domestic problems of poverty and inequality rather than interfere more in this area of the world.

You’ve heard this before ( and I’m one hard to impress), YOU AMAZINGLY SURPRISE ME.
An artist, a commentary writer upon picture about the overlooks in life I love my produce, but have a hell of a time getting galleries to pay attention. But I’ll keep trying till I get called to my next assignment in space.
    Keep on informing me.
